One of my old colleagues, Sudarshan Bharatiya sent me a mail today on Taj Mahal. Indeed, it was an interesting revelation and the pictures with the text made it much more worth to save and share the mail.

IS HISTORY JUSTIFIED??? ??

NOW READ THIS…….

No one has ever challenged it except Prof. P.N. Oak, who believes the whole world has been duped. In his book Taj Mahal: The True Story, Oak says the Taj Mahal is not Queen Mumtaz’s tomb but an ancient Hindu temple palace of Lord Shiva (then known as Tejo Mahalaya ).

In the course of his research Oak discovered that the Shiva temple palace was usurped by Shah Jahan from the then Maharaja of Jaipur, Jai Singh.

In his own court chronicle, Badshahnama, Shahjahan admits that an exceptionally beautiful grand mansion in Agra was taken from Jai Singh for Mumtaz’s burial.

The ex-Maharaja of Jaipur still retains in his secret collection two orders from Shahjahan for surrendering the Taj building.

Using captured temples and mansions, as a burial place for dead courtiers and royalty was a common practice among Muslim rulers. For example, Humayun, Akbar, Etmud-ud-Daula and Safdarjung are all buried in such mansions.

Oak’s inquiries began with the name of Taj Mahal. He says the term ‘Mahal’ has never been used for a building in any Muslim countries from Afghanisthan to Algeria .

“The unusual explanation that the term Taj Mahal derives from Mumtaz Mahal was illogical in at least two respects. Firstly, her name was never Mumtaz Mahal but Mumtaz-ul-Zamani,” he writes.

Secondly, one cannot omit the first three letters ‘Mum’ from a woman’s name to derive the remainder as the name for the building.

“Taj Mahal, he claims, is a corrupt version of Tejo Mahalaya, or Lord Shiva’s Palace.

Oak also says the love story of Mumtaz and Shahjahan is a fairy tale created by court sycophants, blundering historians and sloppy archaeologists. Not a single royal chronicle of Shahjahan’s time corroborates the love story.

Furthermore, Oak cites several documents suggesting the Taj Mahal predates Shahjahan’s era, and was a temple dedicated to Shiva, worshipped by Rajputs of Agra city.

For example, Prof. Marvin Miller of New York took a few samples from the riverside doorway of the Taj. Carbon dating tests revealed that the door was 300 years older than Shahjahan.

European traveller Johan Albert Mandelslo, who visited Agra in 1638 (only seven years after Mumtaz’s death), describes the life of the cit y in his memoirs. But he makes no reference to the Taj Mahal being built.

The writings of Peter Mundy, an English visitor to Agra within a year of Mumtaz’s death, also suggest the Taj was a noteworthy building well before Shahjahan’s time.

Prof. Oak points out a number of design and architectural inconsistencies that support the belief of the Taj Mahal being a typical Hindu temple rather than a mausoleum. Many rooms in the Taj Mahal have remained sealed since Shahjahan’s time and are still inaccessible to the public . Oak asserts they contain a headless statue of Lord Shiva and other objects commonly used for worship rituals in Hindu temples.

Fearing political Backlash, Indira Gandhi’s government tried to have Prof. Oak’s book withdrawn from the bookstores, and threatened the Indian publisher of the first edition dire consequences. There is only one way to discredit or validate Oak’s research. The current government should open the sealed rooms of the Taj Mahal under the UN supervision and let international experts investigate.

    Arjunpuri,

There is a very interesting recent research account paper in Current Science by Prof. R. Balasubramanium “New Insight on modular planning of the Taj Mahal” see site: http://www.ias.ac.in/currsci/jul102009/42.pdf that shows that Taj Mahal was built based on planning Sanskrit units that built ancient places like mohenjo-daro and harappa, Lothal, famous Ashoka’s Iron pillar in New Delhi and many ancient structures and temples. This recent article emboldens Prof.P.N.Oaks thoery about Taj Mahal. This shows continuity of ancient civilization for at least 4000 years with with perhaps Taj Mahal-the greatest wonder of the world as their very last project. Even greater wonder is who were the real builders and architects. There are so many chambers and halls locked up at Taj Mahal that no one has been able to see inside since Moghul king ordered it closed in 1632 A.D. You may ask now the same question as Prof.P.N. Oak had:- Why current Government of India not investigate their archaeological treasures?. Am I left to beleive that Ghosts of Moghul kings still rule India?.

Please google Prof. Balasubramanium very recent research work which will enlighten everyone following this story.

  4. nitin chavda says:

this is the great work done by the researchers i m pround on them because almost all monuments are made by hindus everywhere even in kuwait recently archeaologist found temples and they are 2000 years old and hindu people have the real talent as far as architecture profession is concerned and this is the revelation that this taj mahal is nothing but the temple of shiva

  5. Muhammad says:

The dream of success without its ability to achieve is probably a hallucination. Prove it! before accepting any ridiculious truth. You people are all educated people i guess!. Hello see man we have studied how aurangazeb came to Hindustan, how he destroyed 10.000 Hindu temples, The proof of Aurangzeb’s land grant for famous Hindu religious sites in Kasi, Varanasi can easily be verified from the deed records extant at those sites. He allegedly built musjid infront of Kasi temple. You know how he converted , reconstructed some of the biggest Hindu temples. We have lost so many temples by this foreign invaders namely muslim invaders…You know “Tejo Mahalaya” was built back 400 years before Shah Jahan was born. It is proved by some of the foreign investigators. Even B.B.C has told it is “The Temple of Lord Shiva ” not a “tomb”. You know there was a book written against this by P.N.Oak who has given more than 108 proof against your so called “Taj Mahal”. And that book was banned by the great ‘Indira Gandhi’ fearing of muslim votes. I think you are a well educated person So if you need more proof then just go to this website where you can get all the information regarding your so- called “Taj Mahal”-

i m sorry there is not one building made by muslims anywhere in that period in india.
babri masjid in delhi was a maha kali temple
even in mecca the black room containd shiv ling
sorry no use arguing even with facts you all muslims will not believe

    • No nonsense says:

OK. Do you have the name of the builder of all those muslim buildings? Do you have any document proof (any plan, etc.,) that these exact builders built all those muslim buildings? If you have, please let me know!
I think you need to apply more commonsense while posting your comments.
I can also ask you (and only you) the below in your same tone.
What is the proof that the quran that you are reading today is the exact version of what was written by prophet muhammad (peace be upon him).
No evidence of writing/printing quran during muhammad’s time.
Afterall Quran was written after a long period post muhammad’s death! And what is the guarantee that muhammad existed! Do you have his birth certificate or his photo to prove that he existed! The whole thing might be a cooked story…. Convince me on this first if you have any proof!

  6. Nischay says:

Name of the builder? Which world do you live in? You think a builder built this? Indian civilization is way older than any other place on this planet. you think that the bedouin had any knowledge of architecture? You must be fantasizing. lol. khajurao, Hampi, Every palace in rajasthan, every great temple across India is not your so called islamic architecture. Infact there are no known islamic architects. Ancient India had several great architects. Vastu is a vedic science and not islamic. mohenjodaro was not islamic. In Thanjavur, the capital of the Cholas in the 10th century, there stands a temple made entirely of granite. 207 feet high, the Thanjavur Hindu religious temple is famous for its bronze and stone sculpture and for the narrative murals in the interior. Dynasties after the Cholas continued building temples, adding to the standard set by the Cholas and striving to build higher than before. Gopuras were massive temples, twice as high as they were broad with uneven storeys which diminished as they ascended. The construction of the temple itself was a complicated one, with carved and painted exteriors and interiors. Unlike Muslims, Hindus emphasized on liberal usage of images of gods, goddesses, their vehicles and even their devotees.
Timurlame took back indian artisans to build his capital in samarkand. there is nothing called islamic architecture. go read history and you will know what i am talking about.

by the way, Muslims had their ass kicked by our Hindu kings several times.

Muslims bring ZERO benefits in to our world since they made their entrence. What good bring brought the muslims? What good did they do? What good are they doing? The only thing they are trying to accomlish is to “show off” how good the islam is….which is not by far. Even the devil (Raavan) himself is better then a muslim.

      • Ganesh says:

Existence of 2 so-called tombs does not prove antiquity. The right way to prove antiquity is radio-carbon dating of the foundation. Anyway, how does these slabs change the antiquity of the structure?

  14. ssmalayalee says:

what tombs…two slabs of stone? you call that a tomb? why not break it and see if this f….king woman is really there…..ha ha haha

  16. Satish Kumar says:

This Blog’s correspondents seem to have swallowed a purported BBC report on Taj Mahal’s Hindu origins hook, line and sinker. I, on the other hand, find the article deeply disturbing because it is based on:
    1. a distortion and manipulation of the source documents, and
2.an inexcusable ignorance of the basic principles of architectural history.

    Dodgy Use of Source Material
The headline of the post runs: “BBC says about the Taj Mahal – Hidden Truth – Never Say it is a Tomb”. This wording is deliberately misleading, even fraudulent. Firstly, the text is gleaned from an edited version of a BBC article, and not from a BBC website. Secondly, the BBC article does not endorse the Hindu temple version of Taj history as the post implies, but impartially reports it. Thirdly, the purported BBC piece also presents the conventional history version which is tellingly missing from the post. Finally, BBC has no business taking a stand on this issue and in fairness it doesn’t. It is a news organisation, for goodness sake, not an expert on Indian architecture.

Despite the report’s flagrant lack of credibility it has gone viral, endlessly repeated by bloggers and forums, as if it is gospel truth. This troubling phenomenon of intentionally twisted history achieving widespread currency has roused me to respond.

    Clueless About Architectural History
A major part of the post breathlessly recites conspiracy theorist P. N. Oak’s arguments attesting to Taj Mahal’s Hindu temple origins. He cites the Hindu motifs and symbols on Taj’s facades as evidence. But this evidence proves absolutely nothing. Throughout history architects from one tradition have routinely adopted features from other traditions. That is the way architecture develops and evolves.

Examples of architectural styles appropriating ideas from outside sources are legion. Just one example: Westminster Abbey in London – Britain’s most venerated medieval cathedral – abounds with pointed arches, a structural feature imported from Muslim architecture. That does not make it an Islamic edifice.

Indian history is a show case for this type of cross-fertilization. Islamic architecture here incorporates so many Hindu motifs it is called the Indo-Islamic style. If we were to follow Mr. Oak’s logic all the monuments we call Muslim in India should be identified as Hindu because they include some Hindu decorative elements.

By Mr. Oak’s reasoning even Edwin Lutyen’s Rashtrapathi Bhavan is a Hindu building on the grounds that it incorporates Indian design features such as jallis, chujjas, chhattris, Sanchi railings, sculptural elephants and the like.

Another strike against Mr. Oak’s fanciful theory is that the Taj Mahal contravenes the fundamental principles of Hindu temple design in its spatial organization, its exterior form, its use of light, its inward focus and it relationship with the earth and the sky.

I could go on and on debunking Mr. Oak’s over-the-top statements one by one, but I will desist in the interest of sanity.

    On a Personal Note
When I was a student of architecture in the early 60’s Mr. Oak for a period basked in the media spotlight. At the time I wrote a rebuttal to his Taj Mahal theory for the Delhi edition of the Statesman newspaper. I ended my piece with a plea: “Let us have no more of this rewriting of history for narrow, parochial reasons.” I stand by these words.

  17. Satish Kumar says:

When I submitted a comment, an automated response told me I had already said it. I just composed the comment and sent it to your blog. In fact I didn’t even know this blog existed until now. What can I say: miracles never cease in the blogosphere! Your system must be clairvoyant!

  18. Jagdeep says:

All the fuss about nothing, folks the evidence supporting the construction of the Taj is missing to date and we should not be bashing each other but enjoying the beauty of this magnificent structure.
It was built by indians be they Hindu of Muslim so be it. Let us be proud of that.

  22. Satish says:

The statement “BBC says Taj Mahal — Hidden Truth — Never say it is Tomb” is completely false. The BBC has never made such a statement. No one has ever produced the original text where BBC says this.

The main proponent of the Hindu origins of the Taj Mahal is P .N. Oak. But then P.N. Oak also claims that the Kaaba in Mecca is a Hindu Temple. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P._N._Oak).

Koenraad Elst, one of the most pro-Hindutava European scholars of Hinduism, has comprehensively demolished Oak’s Taj Mahal theory calling it an example of “funny attempts at compensation” within a “Hindu inferiority complex”. (http://koenraadelst.blogspot.com/2010/06/incurable-hindu-fondness-for-pn-oak.html).

That educated people believe wholeheartedly in P.N.Oak’s patently false Taj Mahal theory –based as it is on a complete misunderstanding of linguistic science and architectural theory & history — is a very a depressing situation. Hindus have built some of the world’s most astonishing architectural masterpieces: Ajanta and Elephanta caves, Kandariya Mahadev temples, the Sun Temple in Konarak to name a few. They are glorious achievements to be proud of. Why must we falsely appropriate the architectural monuments of other religions? This capacity for self-delusion points to a vast inferiority complex. As a Hindu I find this utterly disheartening.
